Class composition

Each class session will have it's own character, but most will follow the pattern of quiz, short lecture, scenarios, break, skills, scenario, clean up and reset. The largest portion of our time will be dedicated to scenarios.

Quiz:
These will be a short test covering current, and possibly past subjects, to get a feel for the student's progress in learning the concepts of OEC.

Scenarios:

Scenarios are a situation where the student is presented with a patient with unknown injury or illness and the student will apply the assessment procedure to determine the possible injury or illness. That information will be used to formulate a plan to stabilize the patient using one or more of the interventions available to the OEC technician. From there the treatment is implemented and the patient is prepared for transport. As the course develops, radio communication will also be included.

The class is broken down into groups of 2 or 3 or more students depending on the needs of the scenario. One student will be the patient and will be instructed on his training injury and how to present. Another student will be assigned the role of lead and he will be responsible for primary care of the patient, performing the assessment and determining the course and application of interventions. Other students, when necessary for the scenario, will be responsible for carrying out ancillary tasks related to care as directed by the lead.

Breaks:
We will stop, as a group, once per evening for 10 to 15 minutes for everyone to relax and do what they need. There will be other brief lulls where individuals can go about personal business, so there is enough time to regain your composure throughout the evening.

Skills:
In OEC, skills are tasks that are not medical interventions, but still need to be performed from time to time to complete treatment or prepare a patient for transport. Skills include, but are not limited to removing a helmet, installing an airway adjunct, assembling an O2 tank and regulator, removing ski boots.

Clean up and reset:
The room we are using is a training room for our host company and has many tables and chairs laid out in specific patterns. We will move these to accommodate our needs.  At the end of each class we will need to assure that the room is as clean as we found it and that any changes we have made to the setup are returned to "as found" condition.
