There are a number of tasks you must complete to take this class and all must be complete before the start of the course. Anyone can join the Sacramento OEC class, there is no medical or training prerequisite.
Steps to join are:
Join NSP
This must be started at least 2 months before class begins. There are a few processing delays from both NSP and possibly from your patrol director. It is best if you register through your prospective patrol. If you choose not to, you can register as an associate. This option is only for those who do not intend affiliated with any patrol until later (It costs a bit more for this option.)
Follow the NSP new member sign up procedure.
Steps to join are:
- Join the National Ski Patrol (NSP).
- Register for the class on NSP web site.
- Register for the class with the instructor and pay class fees.
- Get the book.

There are annual fees to be a member of NSP. The fees you pay to NSP include the national course fee and dues that should take you through the end of the calendar year. This money stays with NSP and no portion is paid to the local operations to defer cost of running the class.
Once you are member of NSP, you will need to register for the class on the nsp.org. Contact the instructor for the course number. When you have received the number, browse to nsp.org and log in, navigate to 'member resources' and select 'course schedule'. In the 'course number starts with' box paste the course number. The class should come up and you can follow the directions to register for the class.
Register with the local class
Contact the instructor to state your interest in attending an upcoming class. Include information about which patrol you are planning to join, any prior medical experience, and whether you are already certified in CPR for the professional rescuer (or equivalent). Note that this is not the typical work/community CPR certification unless you are a medical provider or first responder. There may be one or more opportunities to get this certification at a discounted rate from commercially offered classes.
The class fees paid to the local sponsoring patrol are determined by expenditures incurred to hold the class and final exam, equipment purchase and maintenance, and providing you with the necessary supplies. The instructors get no payment--they are all volunteers. There is no profit for the organization.
- Regional Fees $20 For equipment repair, maintenance, purchase
- Medical Supplies $50 Cost of individual student medical supply kits (yours to keep)
- Class Expenses $130 Reproduction, consumables, class supplies, final exam expense
- Classroom rental $0.00 Aero Metals has donated the space this year.
Total Fees $200
The payment, in full, is required at least 8 weeks prior to the first class to confirm that we have enough committed students for the class to proceed.
.Prefered payment is online via Eventbrite using this link (Pay Fees) or with a check made out to Eastern Sierra Region. Do not make the check out to an individual. This will ensure your place in the class and assure that we have the number of serious students committed to the class. Contact me for the address.
Getting the required course text book
This book should be purchased/obtained well before the beginning of the course so that the student can complete as much reading as possible before the first class
The textbook for the course is Outdoor Emergency Care, 6th Edition, new for 2020 (How to get the book). The text contains many concepts, terms and language that you might not have been exposed to up until now. To be successful, set a schedule to assure you have completed the assigned reading prior to each class. You must read Chapters 1 through 7 prior to the first class, but having read as much of the book as possible before class begins will help you get through the class much easier.
